Dr. Rytel is fellowship trained and board certified in orthopaedic surgery as well as sports medicine. He specializes in sports medicine; minimally invasive, arthroscopic surgical procedures of the shoulder, elbow, and knee; and also performs shoulder replacements.
After earning his doctoral degree and completing his residency at Northwestern University Medical School, Dr. Rytel spent one year serving a combined sports medicine fellowship in Richmond, Virginia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He joined Greater Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Associates in 1996, continually serving the Shadyside and Brackenridge areas. Dr. Rytel’s love of sports medicine is apparent in his lengthy record of teams he has worked with and supported. While in Chicago, Dr. Rytel worked with the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs. He continued his connection with professional sports in Pittsburgh, serving as a team physician for the Steelers from 1996-2000. Currently, Dr. Rytel serves high school athletes as a team physician for the Shady Side Academy Bulldogs and Freeport Yellowjackets. Being an avid sportsman himself, Dr. Rytel pays close attention to improving function in two of the most common problems facing athletes: shoulder instability and knee ligament injuries. He says, “I enjoy the opportunity to work with athletes from various sports, helping them to speed their recovery and return to full function.”
As a former member, Dr. Rytel sponsors the GPOA cycling team, Pittsburgh’s top racing team. When not actively involved in sports, Dr. Rytel is involved in education. He is a preceptor for the UPMC Primary Care Sports Medicine fellows and UPMC Shadyside Family Medicine residents. He also participates in the Annual Sports Medicine Conference at Shady Side Academy.
A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Dr. Rytel now calls Shadyside his home. His interests include running, skiing, cycling, water skiing, and fitness.
