Stephen Hribar, MD
Dr. Hribar, a native of Western Pennsylvania, joined Greater Pittsburgh Orthopaedic Associates in 2007. He graduated with honors from Gannon University, then attended medical school at Temple University. An internship and Orthopaedic Surgery residency followed at Hamot Medical Center and Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Erie, PA. He was privileged to have served as Chief Resident at both facilities.
Dr. Hribar’s main professional interest is in the latest technical advancements in joint replacement surgery such as less invasive surgery, joint resurfacing instead of replacement, and the use of newer materials to replace joint surfaces. Dr. Hribar was one of the first Orthopaedic Surgeons in Western Pennsylvania to perform knee replacement with the Journey™ knee system, which uses a novel surface material and more closely mimics natural knee motion. He is also one of the few Orthopaedic Surgeons in Western Pennsylvania that performs the Birmingham hip resurfacing procedure.
Dr. Hribar says, “now is an exciting time in Orthopaedics. Technical breakthroughs have improved the durability of joint replacement and resurfacing implants, which, in turn, allows us to definitively treat arthritis at a younger age than before. This is very rewarding for me, because patients are developing arthritis at younger ages than before because high school and college athletics result in more wear and tear than in the past.”
Sports Medicine is another professional passion of Dr. Hribar. He is Team Physician for Slippery Rock University and is an instructor for Slippery Rock University’s Athletic Training Department. He has also given freely of his time and talents as Team Physician for the Erie Otters hockey team and worked “ringside” for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission.
When not practicing Orthopaedics, Dr. Hribar enjoys spending time with his wife and their three children. You can also find him on the sidelines of the Cranberry Youth Athletic Association where he manages baseball and coaches basketball.
