Phyllis Montellese, MD

Dr. Montellese began working at GPOA in 2004 in close working association with Dr. Michael Rytel, an Orthopedic Sports Medicine physician at GPOA. She focuses on rehabilitation, strength training, injury prevention and expediting return to play or normal activities as soon possible.

She began her career as a Family Practitioner and developed an interested in Sports Medicine. She achieved Board Certification in Primary Care Sports Medicine in 1999. Soon, she added Co-directorship of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship to her duties as full-time faculty in the Family Medicine Residency at UPMC-Shadyside Hospital.

Dr. Montellese has served as Team Physician for Chatham College, Serra Catholic high school football, Ambridge high school football, and Pittsburgh City Schools athletics where she supervised and mentored residents interested in Sports Medicine. “I am proud that I was able to help them achieve their goals while working to provide physician coverage for all City School Football games,” says Dr. Montellese.

Originally from New York City, Dr. Montellese moved to Pittsburgh in 1985. As a single mom since 1989, she is especially proud of her 2 grown children. By April 2008, she will receive the title of “grandma.” Dr. Montellese enjoys time at home with her husband Tom and their daughter. She likes snorkeling whenever the opportunity presents itself. Her Pittsburgh hobbies include walking, caring for her dog, reading, gardening and crocheting.
