"Although the specialty is called spinal surgery, surgery is actually our last, not our first answer," says Dr. Casey, an advocate of preventative health awareness for his patients and their families.
Dr. Casey says he frequently sees patients with ruptured discs and degenerative spinal problems due to constant wear and tear on the spine, many times work related. He says with proper care of the spine and overall good health practices, "the number of spine problems could probably be cut in half," he estimates.
Dr. Casey's wish is to keep his patients as healthy as possible before a problem occurs. However, if it reaches the point that a physician's opinion is needed, he says, "our approach is to seek the most effective, non-invasive options available to treat a patient's condition. However, there will always be situations where surgical procedures are the only effective option."
"I find the complexities of the spine are among the most challenging and fascinating aspects of orthopaedic medicine."
Dr. Casey, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, treats pinched nerves, tumors, ruptured discs, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, infection and arthritis.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Dr. Casey says he's a "retired athlete," but still enjoys sailing and golf. He and his wife, affectionately called "Slo," spend most of their time with their three boys and two girls, ranging in age from 15 to 25, who are involved in sports, acting and other school-related activities.
