Dr. Johnstone has been a resident of the Pittsburgh area for almost all of his life. After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh, he attended the Dartmouth Medical School Hospitals for a year of internal medicine and one year of general surgical training. After 2 years in the US Navy, he returned to complete his Orthopaedic surgical training at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Johnstone has practiced Orthopaedic Surgery for over 30 years in Pittsburgh. During this time, he has developed three major areas of subspecialization: joint reconstruction, sports medicine, and pediatric ortopaedics. He has a particular interest in the care of patients with cerebral palsy.

For 27 years, Dr. Johnstone was the team physician for Carnegie-Mellon University, caring for all of the orthopaedic needs of the student-athletes. Since 2004, he has been co-medical director of the Athletic Training Program of Duquesne University. As a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery for the University of Pittsburgh, he is actively involved in helping to train orthopaedic residents. He also regularly helps to teach musculoskeletal medicine to the family practice residents of UPMC-St. Margaret Hospital.

Yearly, Dr. Johnstone spends one month in the West African country of Niger helping to improve the orthopaedic care there. This involves both teaching and actively caring for the patients that he sees.

He and his wife raised three children, and now enjoy "empty nest" living in the North Hills area. They both are actively involved in the Bellevue Christian Church, serving in a variety of capacities.
